12/6/14 Winter Grazing Workshop, 1 p.m.
Hosted by J.C. and Barbara Winstead of Craig County, this workshop will demonstrate “stockpiling” techniques which will provide cattle a highly nutritious diet of grass for much of the winter, rather than being dependent upon hay. This workshop will focus on the winter portion of the grazing season and will provide demonstrations on strip grazing, temporary fencing, and watering facilities.
J.C. is well known in grazing circles having been an active member in the Virginia Forage and Grassland Council. Representatives from Virginia Cooperative Extension, Mountain Castles SWCD, and the NRCS will be discussing the forage quality and quantity of the stockpiled grasses as well as conservation program opportunities.
This free workshop will be held at at the Winstead farm at 150 Big Mountain Rd, New Castle, VA. It is open to the public; light refreshments will be provided by Mountain Castles SWCD. For additional information please call the USDA Bonsack Service Center at 540-977-2698, ext. 3.
