A. Plan
- Choose which crop fields you want to enroll. Select a practice for each field. Keep in mind planting dates and kill-down requirements.
- Select species of cover crop you intend to plant. Note bonus payments for triticale and rye stands. You may find our Cover Crop form helpful in reporting your decisions to us.
- We’ll also need a completed Part I and up to date W-9 on file. These forms are distributed as a bundle in our Cover Crop mailer. You may request a postal delivery of our mailer by contacting us via phone or email.
- Review your Nutrient Management Plan. If it is out of date or you need a new one, contact a plan writer. For more information about NMPs, click here.
- You will receive an approval notification from us when enrollment is finalized.
B. Plant
- Implement the practice as enrolled. If your plans have changed since enrollment, notify us so that we can discuss your options!
- Report planting dates to District staff.
- Note that 60% coverage must be obtained by January 1 and maintained through March 14. Based on practice selected, special conditions apply for pasturing, nutrient application, and termination of cover crops. Check the practice descriptions for specific requirements.
C. Payment
Upon completion of the practice, District staff will deliver a check to you and we hope that you continue to reap the benefits of healthier soils!
Number of cover crop participants is increasing! We had 31 applications during PY2026. Return yours today to be included in 2027!
